Specification of Letters fiatent.
Patented J an. 19, 1909.
Application as m 22, 1908. Serial r 44 41736.
Te whom) it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, SranNoU's W. WIGNER,
a citizen of the United Statearesiding at ouglas, county of Cochise, and Territory of =Ar1zon'a, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Washboards, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to new and useful improvements in washboards, and has for its ob'ect toprovide an exceedingly simple and "e active device of this character whereby the washing surface of the board when ressed against by the user.
Wit these ends in view, this invention in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim. 7
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may underto make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing formingpa part of this specificatiomin whichigure 1' is a front elevation of my improved washboard. Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and, Fig. 3, a back view of the lower portion of theback, clearly 4 showing the position of the spring.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the sides of the was-hboard, and may be of any desired shape or size, and across the top of these is fastened t e cured the backboard C, so that it comes in contact with the top board B1 Secured between the sides A in proximity to the 11 per ends, and extending horizontally is tlge rest D; this rest may be of wood or metal, either of which is desirable for this purpose, that is it-acts as a shelf on which the soap may be laid when the person using the board does not desire to use the soap.
E indicates a bracasecured between the sides A in proximity to their lower ends.
F represents the washboard proper or washing surface to which is secured the back 'G, and these are pivoted between the upper ends of the sides A b some suitable means, such ais screws ornail; H.
brace will give' topboard B, .then on the back is se- To the lower end of the back G are fastened. the flat metallic springs I, parallel with the sides and the flat parallel with the bottom of the back, and these a rings are adapted to rest against the when the washboard proper is in position. I
In practice while a person is using the board, when they bear down upon the wash board pro er it will give to a certain extent because 0 the spring, and this will make the washing easier as it will absorb agreat deal of the shock, which is caused when using the board in which the washing surface is per manently secured to the sides.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact-details of construction here shown as these may be varied within certain limits without departing from thespirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new'an'd useful is In a wash-board, the combination of two sides, means for holding the tops of said sides always in their same relative position, a
. brace fastened between said sides in prox imity to their lower ends which with the top board will keep the sides parallel, a washboard proper pivotally secured between said sides in proximity to their upper ends, fiat springs running parallel with the sides of the board secured to the back of the wash-board proper in proximity to its lower end adapted to rest against the brace, and a flat spring secured by its center portion to the lower end of the wash-board proper, said spring run,- ning parallel with the lower edge of the washoard proper ada ted to rest upon the upper surface of the race, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
