Abstract
11,689. Ziegler, L. A. May 21. Transferring designs; transfers.-A tanning material such as quebracho extract, tannic acid, chromium salts, alum, &c. is employed, either in the dry state or as an aqueous solution, to transfer designs, pictures, &c. to the surface of pottery, stoneware, or other materials. The transfer is saturated with au aqueous solution of the tanning- material, the article moistened by the same solution, and the design pressed on to the surface. The tanning-material may also be applied in powdered form while the ink is moist, and the design transferred by means of water. Two coats of varnish may be applied to the transfer, the latter of which is dusted over with powdered tanning-material. The powdered material may also be mixed with turpentine or lavender oil and added to the ink or varnish before use. The paper may also be saturated with tanning-material, or the tanning- material may be introduced into the paper pulp during manufacture.
