Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ILDO RAMSDELL, or ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
INK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 345,448", dated July 13,1886.
Application filed January 3, 1885. Serial No. 151,959. (No specimens.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ILDo RAMsDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia,
Y have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Composition of lnk, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved composition of matter or ink; and it has for its object to produce an ink that will possess the proper fluidity to enable writings, drawings, or designs to be produced upon paper, and which, when exposed to the light for a short time, will become insoluble in water and acids, which will be sufficiently elastic to bend with the paper without cracking and injuring the design, and will be capable, when used for lithographic or transfer purposes,of receiving or absorbing a fatty ink for the production of transcripts on lithographic stone or other surfaces, as more fully hereinafter specified.
In carrying out my invention I take bichromate of potash, one dram; gelatine, one-half ounce; prussiate of potash, one-half dram,
Water, sixteen ounces; tannate of iron, onehalf dram; aniline, (or other suitable coloring-inatterQ one dram. The bichromate of potash and the gelatine are preferably dissolved separately in a sufficient portion of the water, and when mixed together with the neutral coloring material form the ink. The
ink is then in condition to be used in the same manner as ordinary ink for the production of writings, drawings, or designs, by means of a writing or drawing instrument. When the proportions are changed for specific purposes, if the ink is sufficiently fluid to flow readily, it may be slightly warmed previous to use. These writings or drawings may then be subjected to a lithographic or transfer process for reproducing printed or written matter, and may be rolled up with lithographic ink, and the designs then transferred to a lithographic stone or zinc plate for reproduction by the ordinary process. Gelatine is used to give body, and the bichromate of potash renders the gelatine insoluble after it has been dried.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
An ink consisting of bichromate of potash, gelatine, prussiate of potash, water, tannate of iron, and aniline or other coloring-matter, combined in about the proportions and manner described, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ILDO RAMSDELL.
