Abstract

24,414. Rateau, A. C. E., and Sautter, HarlÚ, et Cie. Dec. 10, A.D. 1902, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Steam turbznes.-A turbine fitted with a governing-device for enabling the exhaust from a steam engine to be used as the motive fluid either alone or together with live steam, is shown in Fig. 1. A high - pressure turbine 4, and a low-pressure turbine-1 are mounted on a common shaft 5. The live steam pipe 29 opens into the high-pressure turbine which is connected by a pipe 9 to the lowpressure turbine, and the pipe also has a branch pipe 12 for the supply of exhaust steam from another engine. The supply of exhaust steam passes through a check valve 14 which can be closed by a handle 16. The supply of steam to the low-pressure turbine is regulated by a throttle valve 11 controlled by a governor 6 on the driving- shaft. The supply of live steam is regulated by a valve 23 controlled by a flexible diaphragm 25 adjusted by a spring 28 and exposed on one side through a pipe 26 to the pressure in the pipe 9. In operation, the governor controls the throttle valve 11 and, because of the check valve 14, causes variations of pressure in the pipe 9 which act on and regulate the live steam admission valve 23. A modified live steam regulating - device has an annular valve 38, Fig. 2, controlling the steam admission to the turbine 40 and partially rotated to vary the passage-way through the ports 41 by a pinion 44 gearing with a toothed rack on the valve and having on the same shaft a second pinion 47 regulated by a hand-wheel 46 or by pressure-controlled pistons 50, Fig. 4, working in cylinders 51 of different size and connected to the low-pressure admission pipe and to the high-pressure admission pipe, (or the atmosphere), respectively.
