Abstract

13,254. Smith, T. S. June 13. Brakes.-In a rear-wheel brake for bicycles &c., a lever a through a link d, a rocker e, and a system of rods and levers, or preferably wires, draws up the blocks on each side of the wheel. The operating-lever, fulcrummed to the upper side of the handle-bars, is connected from a hook a<4> to the rocker e by an adjustable rod d ; a link f <1>, connected to the rear arm of the rocker, is freely jointed to a sliding and rotatable tube f, which is threaded to receive a rod f<2> free to slide in a guide-tube g. A pair of wires h', h<2>, threaded through an eye at the end of the rod f<2>, branch through guidetubes s i<1>, i', round the opposite sides of the seat lug, and, passing for a distance down the back stays, are finally attached to slides carrying the blocks. To protect the cables, covertubes m may extend from the guides i<1>, i' to the slides. The cables may be connected to an ordinary yoke instead of slides, or they may terminate in tubular slides, working within the guides and adapted to draw up the blocks. A single wire may, if desired, be used from the rocker to the point of bifurcation in the cover-tubes, or the branch guides may be dispensed with and the cables each passed over a grooved pulley. Springs retract the slides to remove the brakes.
