Abstract

17,221. Tilston, E., and Salisbury, S. Aug. 28. Brakes, rim, for cycles, motor cars, and other vehicles are actuated so that the brake pressure on the two sides of the rim is equalized. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the shoes c" are carried by screwed rods c<1> secured by lock-nuts in bosses c formed on rods e mounted in sockets e<1> formed in clips a secured to the forks b, springs f<11>, adjustable by means of washers f<1> and nuts f, press the shoes away from the rim. The rods c<1> are provided with rollers d<1>, which bear on plates d<11> formed on the clips a, and prevent the bosses c from rotating. The bosses care formed with screwed rods g secured by caps g' to flexible cords &c. g<11>, the upper ends of which are wound on pulleys j<1> formed on a lever j mounted so that it can be rotated to adjust the tension of the cord, in a boss k pivoted to a hand-lever h, pivoted to the arm k<11> of a clip A<111> secured to the handlebar stem. The lever is fitted with a stop k<1>, which keeps it raised sufficiently to hold the springs f<11> in compression. In a modification, the cords g<11> are replaced by rigid wires secured to the ends of the lever j. They may be adjusted in length by forming them in two portions secured together either by means of coupling- sleeves having right and left hand screw-threads which engage similar threads formed on the parts, or by means uf the clip shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the wires being inserted in a coupling-sleeve l<11> and gripped by a washer or tube m<1> and a bolt m. In another modification, cords g<11> are formed in one piece, and pass over guides formed longitudinally in the lever j. The cord is adjusted by winding it over a boss formed on the central pivot pin of the lever. In this form, the rollers d<1> are dispensed with. The lever j may be replaced by one or more pulleys. Fig. 10 shows another modification, in which the bosses c are pivoted at q to the rods e, and are formed on rods q<1> connected to a lever j pivoted to an adjustable rod o connected to the lever h. In modifications of this arrangement, the lever j either is formed in one with the rod o or is dispensed with, and the rods q<1> curved inwards and attached directly to the rod o. Fig. 17 shows this arrangement adapted for the rear wheel of a bicycle, the clips a being secured to the rear forks and the lever connected by a cord g<11> passing over pulleys mounted at the angles of the frame, to a pulley mounted on the lever h which operates the front wheel brake. The brakes may have separate levers.
