Brakes.-For operating the rear rim brake o f a velocipede, the front rod e is connected to the middle of the U- shaped upper arm of a double bellcrank lever d, which, through a stirrup g and wires or a wire f, actuates a aliding link l, Fig 12, connected by two arms m<2> to a spring-containing tube m, the position of the brake blocks being adjusted by rotation of a nut r by means of a cap r<2>. As shown, the bellcrank lever is mounted on a clip a ; but, if desired, it may be pivoted to a U-shaped band, which, fitted to the head, may be provided with a tongue to engage a slot therein, or may be secured in position by a screw ; or the lever may be mounted directly upon the head tube. The cranked lower end of the rod e is threaded through the lever d, a spoke-like head bearing against the inner side. The sheetmetal stirrup may be replaced by one of wire, the wire f being connected thereto by a loop, or by a link, through or into which the wire is threaded ; or the wire may be threaded through a short tube connecting the rear ends of two pieces of wire forming the stirrup. The link l comprises a pair of curved side-plates distanced by pins l<2>, the relief spring taking an abutment against a stop p secured to the bottom bracket. In a modified form, the tube is replaced by a pair of telescoping cups or tubes, the inner of which abuts against a stop, while the link l bears upon a plate or shield fitted to the bottom bracket.
