Abstract
22,602. Sangster, C. T. B. Nov. 9. Brakes, rim. Relates to improvements in the brake mechanism described in Specifications Nos. 10,533 and 22,919, A.D. 1900, and No. 12,746, A.D. 1901. The brakes are shown as applied to a bicycle. The rear-wheel brake comprises a spring stirrup a<1>, carrying brake shoes b which are guided and forced against the rim when the stirrup is drawn forward, by rods a<2> which slide in inclined ears d<1> formed on clips d, the two parts of which are secured round the forks by screws d<4> as shown. In a modification, the stirrup is strengthened by curved plate springs bolted to it. The stirrup is secured to a tube m adjustably clamped by a clamp m<5> over an internally screw-threaded tube m<2>, in which the screwed ends m<1> of a flexible wire j is secured. The wire passes through a tube k, the rear end of which serves as a guide for an enlargement m<3> of the tube m<2>, and which is formed in two telescopic parts k<1>, k<2>, Fig. 3, secured to the bottom bar and adjustable to any length of frame. The wire j terminates in a plug j<1>, Fig. 2, secured in a tube h<4>, which is tapered to fit over a tapered extension of the tube k so as to permit steering, and is jointed to a handlever h<1>, Fig. 6, pivoted by a clip h<2> to one handlebar. A similarly-constructed rim brake applied to the front wheel is actuated by an adjustable rod e', jointed at e<5> to a hand-lever e<1> pivoted by a clip e<3> to the other handle-bar.
