Abstract

22,973. Lavender, H. P. Nov. 13. Brakes.-Relates to rim brakes for the front and rear wheels of cycles and similar vehicles, which can be applied simultaneously or independently. The rear brake A consists of blocks A<1> mounted in shoes A<2>, which are suspended by wires A<4> from a clip E clamped on the tube D, and are mounted on a suitable frame A<5> provided with a screw-threaded wire A<6>. A spring F forming the pin of the clip E is provided with a plate F<1> through which the wire A<6> passes, and the tension of the spring is adjusted by suitably screwing nuts. Wires G connect the plate F<1> with a pair of levers H', which are pivoted at H' on a clip fixed, to the steering-head I, and are connected by a semicircular piece H<3>. This piece rides upon a roller B<12> carried by a sleeve B<10> clamped upon the brake tube B<6>, which is connected by a rod B<7> with the brake lever C. The tube B<6> carries also a stirrup B' provided with brake shoes B' and having a sliding connection with clips J<1> mounted on the front wheel forks. In operation, depression of the lever C raises the tube B<6> so as to put on the front brake, and at the same time the roller B<12> operates the rear brake mechanism. On releasing the brake lever C, the spring F returns both brakes to the off position. By shifting the sleeve B<10> the lever C may be caused to operate the front brake only. When this is the case, a spring L, Fig. 5, is provided on the lever C for taking the front brake off. For operating the rear brake separately, a lever is pivoted on clips on the chain stays so as to be pressed against the spring F by the foot.
