Abstract

12,038. Norton, J. A. May 26. Duplex engines.- The engine has two cylinders, and the piston-rods carry chain-wheels 6 which engage and drive an endless chain 7 on the working -stroke when the wheel is locked by a ratchet-wheel 37 and pawl ; both strokes may be made effective by employing two ratchetwheels 37, 37 and a double-ended pawl. Dead centres are avoided by each piston beginning its working-stroke before the other has finished. The cylinders have separate admission ports 14, 14 and exhaust ports 12, 12 ; the latter are covered by the piston at the end of the stroke as well as beiug controlled by the slide valve 4. The valve is worked by tappets 23, 31 on the piston-rod of the other cylinder which engage arms 24, 32, 20, 29 on rocking shafts carrying pinions which gear with racks 26. The cut off on the idle stroke is effected early, while, on the working-stroke, it may be varied by adjusting the block carrying the arms 20 in the direction of the cylinder axis.
