1380. Freeman, G. C. Jan. 20. Motor cycles; driving- mechanism. -Relates to twospeed and freewheel mechanism adapted for bicycles, motor cars, and other purposes. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus applied to a bicycle, in which a sleeve 7, carrying a toothed wheel 6, is fitted to the hub of the driving-wheel. A sleeve 3 carrying the chain-wheel 1 and a toothed wheel 2 runs freely on the sleeve 7. A circular case or box 4 fitting freely over the wheels 2, 6 has pairs of pinions 5 mounted therein to engage with the wheels 2, 6 so as to complete the driving-train. A ratchet free-wheel clutch may be fitted between the wheels 2, 6, or, when desired for free-wheeling at both speeds, between the pinions 5. At the low speed, the gear box 4 is free, but at the high speed, the box is held by a band brake 10 or by a catch and notches.
