Abstract
23,292. Field, T. C. Nov. 5. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed driving-mechanism for motor road vehicles &c. Figs. 1 and 3 show the application of the invention to a bicycle. A sleeve b is mounted upon the axle a of the rear wheel, and carries at one end the chain-wheel c and at the other end an epicyclic gear. The epicyclic gear is made up of a disc i<1> and a ring i<3>, secured to the sleeve b, between which, on spindles i<2>, are carried the pinions k gearing with a wheel m on the wheel hub e and an internally-toothed annulus j. The chain-wheel c carries spring pawls adapted to engage a ratchetwheel h fixed to the hub, or the ratchet teeth may be formed on the wheel c and the pawls mounted on the hub. The hub is mounted on ball bearings carried by the cones e<2>, e<3>. Over the rim p<1> of the annulus j there is a brake strap p<2>, which is operated from a screw secured to the frame through intermediate links and bell-crank levers, or other suitable brake mechanism may be employed. When the brake is off, the hub is driven direct from the chain-wheel through the ratchet gearing. In coasting, a free wheel is obtained as the hub overruns the chain-wheel. When the brake is applied so as to prevent rotation of the annulus j, the pinions k drive the wheel m, and consequently the hub, at a higher speed than the wheel c, so that a two-speed gearing may be obtained. In a modified form of the invention, a roller clutch replaces the ratchet gear, and the inner wheel of the epicyclic gear, which may rotate freely in ball bearings on the sleeve, is provided with the brake rim, the internally-toothed annulus being secured to the hub. In changing the gear from low to high, the brake acts as an ordinary brake to retard the machine.
