Abstract
7800. Toomer, E. S. April 3. Axial-shaft and reciprocating-piston type; revolving-cylinder type.-Relates to cam mechanism for converting reciprocating into rotary motion applicable in connection with steam, gas, &c. engines, electromotors, &c. The cam in the form of a disc or ring with inclined or undulating surfaces may be fixed to the part to be driven and be rotated by the pressure against its surface of rollers to which the reciprocating motion is imparted in the direction of the shaft ; or the rollers may be mounted on the part to be driven and the cams be moved to and fro in the direction of the shaft ; or again the cam may be stationary and the reciprocating rollers be mounted on the part to be rotated. Fig. 1 shows an application of the first construction. Fig. 10 shows an embodiment of the second arrangement in which the rollers R are mounted in the wheel and the cams are cut in the edges of rings A<3>, A<4> to which reciprocating motion is imparted ; the Figure shows only one pair of the rings. The rings may be worked by a pair of cylinders arranged in tandem, mounted co-axially with the wheels carrying the rollers and on each side of it ; the pistons act only on the inward stroke. The inner ends of the cylinders are in permanent connection with each other, and are charged with glycerine, water, or other fluid by which the two pistons are caused to move simultaneously and in opposite directions. Fig. 15 shows the adaptation of the third arrangement to a steam engine ; the cylinders V are mounted on a conical block B<3> secured to the shaft B and the rollers R on the ends of their piston-rods bear upon a stationary cam ring A<5>; Z indicates a distributing valve-box, and Z<1>, Z' the steam and exhaust pipes. The cam ring may be in the form of a flat plate or ring mounted on pivots, so that its inclination may be varied either automatically or by hand.
