Abstract

18,643. Grant, T. Oct. 18. Compressing.-Compression is effected in two stages. Air or vapour is drawn through the channels b<3>, b<2> and past the cup-leather valve e into the cylinder, and is forced on the return stroke of the piston past the packing d to the other end of the cylinder. On the next stroke it is forced past the leather valve a' to the channel a<4>. The valve a' and the packing f are retained by a ring F and the cylinder cover c. The piston is hollow, and water circulates through it as well as through the cylinder jacket a<3>.
