Abstract

15,092. Ziegler, M. Aug. 23. Drying peat &c.-A furnace for drying and carbonizing peat and the like consists of two parallel vertical retorts 1, 2, opening below into the coke receptacle 3. The two retorts are used alternately for drying and for carbonizing the peat. Each retort is provided with two outlets 4 for gases leading to a condenser 6. The gases produced may be burned in a furnace which supplies with heat the flues 7 surrounding the retort chambers. In the upper end of each retort is a valve arrangement for placing that part of the retort in communication with the flues when desired. In the form shown this consists of a fixed tube 8 closed below and having an opening leading to the flues 7, and other openings 10, 11 communicating with the retort. The latter are provided with hoods 13. Within the tube 8 is a rotatable tube 12, having openings which can be made to coincide with the openings in the tube 8. When peat is first charged into a retort, the tube 12 is so set that combustion gases can pass from the flues through the retort to dry the peat. When the peat is dry, the tube 12 is turned so that communication is shut off, and the peat is then carbonized by external heat. While this is taking place, the other retort has been charged and the peat therein dried. A damper 15 may be used to shut off or open communication between the flues and the chimney passage 14.
