Abstract
9515. Walters, W. M. May 24. Screw propellers; rudders. - Relates to means for reducing the drag or retarding effect of the boss, and the roots of the blades, of a screw propeller. The boss is made much larger than is usual, its diameter being about one-third of the diameter of the screw. In the case of old screws, the present small boss may be enlarged by means of wood or other blocks placed between the blades. The water is directed to and from this large boss by conical pieces placed in the after part of the vessel and the rudder. The pin f on the rudderpost may be cylindrical or tapered, and is made hollow to receive the spherical end of the tapered guide-block on the rudder.
