Elevators.-Relates to elevators for loading and unloading grain, coal, &c. into and from ships, the parts of the elevator being so arranged that flexible bucket belts of rubber, canvas, &c. can be employed. The main elevator consists of two trunks a, fixed together at the top, and supported over the hatchway c upon beams b, between which they are raised and lowered by hand-operated pinions g<5> engaging with racks g<6> on the trunks. In addition to the two main elevators, auxiliary elevators h may be employed, each of which is slung on a shaft h<1> mounted in a bracket i, which is adapted to slide on the outer side of one of the trunks a, and which is raised and lowered by winch tackle i<9>. All the elevators are driven simultaneously from the shaft n, connected by bevel gearing to rope pulleys m. The belt-driving drums of the main and auxiliary elevators are geared to rope pulleys k<4> and l<2> respectively. Each of the driving-ropes, in addition to passing round these pulleys, passes also round guide-pulleys l<5>, l<5>, and l<8> on the main trunk and h and l<4> on the bracket i. The auxiliary elevators discharge into the buckets of the main elevators, which in turn discharge on to an endless band f<1>. The openings in the sides of the main trunks a through which the auxiliary elevators discharge are formed by flexible screens j, which slide with the bracket i.
