Abstract

6556. Nicolaidis, N. J. March 17. Conveying and elevating apparatus. -Ships are loaded and unloaded by a series of telescopic endless-chain elevators 1, of which the upper sprockets are slidably mounted on two parallel shafts 2, 3 driven from a common shaft 4. In the arrangement shown, the shafts 2, 3, 4 are mounted upon beams 2<b>, 3<b>, 4<b> placed across the ship's hatchway, and the elevators are lowered into the hold, so that loading and unloading may take place simultaneously. The elevator chains may carry prongs which pass through a platform carried by the boot, and upon which bales &c. to be lifted are placed; or they may carry buckets, in which case the boot is formed with a shoot down which bulk material may be fed. The elevated material may be discharged down conveyers 14 or shoots 15. Ships may be loaded by suspending the elevators over the side.
