MICHAEL S. COLEMAN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
MINE-SHAFT ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,231, dated November 2'7, 1883.
Application filed October 1,1883. (No modelJ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIcHAEL S. COLEMAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mine-Shaft Elevators, of which the follow- -ing is afnll, clear, and exact description.
one of the screws at the upper ends of the guide-ropes. enlarged. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of an elevator carriage, taken through the line at at, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of an elevator-carriage.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the working of mine and tunnel shafts by providing means for the convenient and speedy removal of the elevator appliances when blasts are to be fired.
The invention consists of carriages traveling upon guide-ropes extending down the shaft, and provided with means for readily attaching, detaching, tightening, and slackening them, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a mine-shaft.
B is the elevator-frame erected over the mouth of the shaft A. I
G are the elevator-carriages, to the tops of which are attached the ends of the hoisting-ropes D." The hoisting-ropes D pass over guide-pulleys E, pivoted to the frame B, and around the hoisting-drum F, to the shaft G of which motion is given from a steam-engine or other suitable power.
H are the platform-timbers, which are bolted to the rocks at the bottom of theshaftA in the screws N are provided with levers O or other convenient means for turning them to tighten or slacken the guide-ropes K. To the lower corners of the carriages G are attached brackets P, the outer ends of which project and have holes formed through them to receive the guide-ropes K. To the tops of the carriages O are attached cross-bars Q, the
ends of which project at the corners of the said tops, and have holes formed in them, directly over the holes in the brackets P, to receive the guide-ropes K. With this construction, when the guideropes Khave been drawn taut, the carriages 0 will move up and down upon them with as much ease and safety as they would upon rigid guide-posts.
In using the improvement, when a blast is to be fired the guide-ropes K are slackened, the hooks J are unhooked, and the said ropes K and the carriages O are raised to such a height that they will not be liable to be injured by the blast. Then. the blast has been shot, the carriages C and ropes K are again lowered, the hooks J are hooked into the eyebolts I, the screws N are turned to tighten the said ropes K, and the elevator is again ready for use, the whole operation of removing the ropes and carriages and replacing them requiring but a few minutes, so that much time and labor will be saved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent 1. In a mine-shaft elevator, the combination, with the top frame, B, the bottom frame, H, and the carriage-frame O, of the guide ropes K, the hooks and eyebolts I J, and the screws N, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the carriage will be guided in its up and down movements, and the guides can be readily removed and replaced, as set forth.
2. In a mine-shaft elevator, the combination, with the top frame, B, the bottom frame, H, and the carriage-frame G, of the guideropes K, the hooks and eyebolts I J, screws N, levers O, swivels L, and clevises M, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a mine-shaft elevator, the combination of the top frame, B, the bottom frame,
H, the carriage-frame G, the ropes K, the hooks and eyebolts I J, screws N, the hoisting-ropes D, pulleys E, and the drum F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
