APPARATUS FOR OPERATING FUMIGATING-TENTS;
Application filed July 22, 1918. Serial No". 246,235.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM .HAnRY' STONE, a citizen of the United States, res1d-" ing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new. and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Operating Tents, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make an apparatus for operating fumigating tents, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 1s a side elevation showing an apparatus for operating fumigating" tents Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view of ahoisting mechanism.
The rigld main frame 1 1s mounted upon a rigid rear axle 2, the axle 2 is mounted upon rear wheels 3, the frame 1 is mounted upon the front axle 4 and connected thereto by a rocker and kingbolt construction 5, and
a draft rigging 6 is connected'to. the axle- 4; so as to produce a truck on the order of a farm wagon and which may be moved through an orchard from tree to tree. v
A turn table 7 is mounted upon the rigid frame 1 and held in place by a central king bolt construction 8. Masts 9 and 10 extend upwardly from the intermediate portions of the turn table 7, and braces 11 and 12 connect the masts 9 and l0'to the outer portions of the turn table 7, so as to hold the masts 9 and 10 in vertical parallel positions. The arms 13 and 14 are pivotally mounted between the upper ends of the masts 9 and 10 by a pin 15, there being a plurality of mating openings 16 through the masts '9 and 10, so that the pin 15 may be raised or lowered by moving it from one pair of openings 16 to another. The arms 13 and 14' are substantially alike and are crossed like a pair of shears. The arm'13 comprises side Fumigatingway bars 17 and'18 spaced apart at their inner Specification of Letters Patent. -Pa,tented Feb, .18, 1919.
lower ends by braces 19 andsecured together at theirouter ends by a bolt'20. 'In a like manner the*arm"14 comprises the side bars 21 and 22 spaced apartat their inner lower ends by braces 23 and secured together at 111611" outer ends by a bolt '24.
In mounting the arms 13 and 14 upon the pin 15'the's1de'bar 21 maybe placed'inside of the side bar 17. and the side bar 18 inside of the side bar'22 and a spacing collar 25 may beplaced upon thepin 15 between side bars 18 and 21. A cross bar 26 is rigidly mounted between the extremelower ends of the side bars 21 and 22"and a similar cross .bar 27 is rigidly mounted between the lower ends of. the side bars 17 and 18.
Links 28 and 29 are connected tothe cross] bars 26 and 27 andthe lower ends of'the links 28 and 29 are connected together by" a pivot 30. The pulley 31 has a hook 31 and a hook 31 engages the spacing collar 25 so that the pulley 31 is supported by the pin 15. A Windlass construction 32 is 'mounted upon the platform 7 and extends below the lower ends'of the masts 9 and 10. A cable 33 is attachedto the pivot 30'and extends over the pulley 31 downwardly under the pulley 33 around the Windlass 32 and upwardly and is again attached to the pivot 30, so that when the Windlass 32 is operated the arms 13 and 14' may be raised or lowered so'that the pivot 30 is held both Links 34 and 35 are connected to the upper outer endsof the arms 13 and 14"by pins 36 and 37, there being a series of holes 38" and 39 through the arms so that th i may be moved from one hole to another'to vaiythe eifective lengths of the arms, and
the links 34 and 35 consist of two parallel straps spaced. apart by the thickness of the arm, and pins 40 and 41 connect the lower ends of the straps, there being spacing collars or guide rollers upon the pins between the straps. The tents 42 and 43 are connected to the links 34 and 35 by cords 44 and .45, the said tents 42 and 43 being large enough to cover the trees to be fumigated.
' Semi-circular hoops 46 and 47 are connected to the lower'edges of the tents 42 and 43 and the hoops are located at the outer sides of the tents from the truck. A rope or cable 48 is connected to the cord 44 and extends downwardly under a pulley 49, said pulley being attached to the ho0k 46, and the rope 48 and 52 are manipulated to hold the tents 42 and 43 upwardly and then the Windlass 32 is operated to swing the arms Y13 and 14 upwardly until the machine is located in proper relation to two trees. Then the de-- vice is manipulated and the tents dropped" around the trees to the groundas shown in Fig. 1. After the fumigating operationhas pulled to raise the outer centralportions of the hoops 46 and 47 as much as is practical.
Then the Windlass 32 is operated toraise the.
tents bodily from the trees and then the vtruck is moved to operative position relative to the next two trees, 7
When 'thetents 42 and43 are to be operated in this way they may be made imperiorate from their lower edges up and all the r way around, whereas tents operated by hand are usually made with flaps to be buttoned together, andv such tents will waste more or less of the fumigating gas.
Various changes may. be made without dc parting from the spirit of my invention as claimed. 7 v
'I claim: 1. An apparatus for operating fumigating tents comprising a truck, masts mounted upon the truck,- arms pivo-tally mounted upon the masts, said arms being crossed, a
Windlass connected to the inner lower, ends of the arms, tents connected to the outer ends of the arms,.means connected to the outer (lopi'es rofi this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing thc ccn missioner of Patents,,
'2'. An apparatus forvoperating fumigat ing tents comprising a truck, a turn table mounted upon the truck, a mast mounted-l i upon the turn table, arms pivotally mounted", upon the mast, links adjustably connected to the outer ends of the arms, tents connected to said links, each tent having connected thereto at its lower outer end a semi-circular hoop, a flexible connection from said hoops passing to the lower ends of said links to i the mast, and means for simul-taneouslylift ing or lowering said arms. v
- 3. An apparatus for operating fumigating tents comprising a truck, a; mast mount: 1 ed thereon, an arm pivoted thereto, a li'nk' adjustably connected to the. ou'terend of said been, completed, the ropes 48 and-52 are arm, a-tent suspended from the lower end of the tent remote lowering said arm. 7
4. An apparatus. for operating fumigat ing ten-ts comprlsing a truck, a mast mounted thereon, an arm pivoted thereto, a link adj ustably connected to the outer end of said arm, a tent suspended from the lower end of said link, the outer lower edges of the tent remote from said truck being provided with a hoop, flexible means connected to'said 'hoop and to said mast for independently raising said hoop and theside of thetent remote from the truck independently of the other side of the tent, and means for raising or lowering said. arm.
Intestimony whereof I-have signed my name to this speclficatlon.
