18,141. Thompson, W. P., [Stevens, J. A.]. Aug. 23. Steam-generator furnaces.-Relates to land and marine boilers with inclined and curved water tubes. There are two water drums, each connected to a single steam drum by two sets of tubes, of which, in the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, one is inclined and the other curved. Both sets may, however, be curved, and their conformation may be modified. Downcomers are also provided at each end. Bridge or baffle walls 6, 6 occupy the spaces between the two sets of tubes on each side, and baffles 7, 7 extend laterally downwards outside the outer sets. A transverse wall divides the furnace chamber into two separate parts, and a central longitudinal wall may be provided to further divide each of these parts in two. In the latter case a third water drum is located beneath the longitudinal wall. These walls may be composed of refractory material, alone or with water tubes embedded in it ; or they may consist of water tubes the spaces between which are filled in by tiles, or of water legs and connecting water boxes or rectangular tubes. These water tubes or water legs connect the steam and water drums. The water drums rest on hollow supports through which air under natural or forced draught may be supplied to the furnace. Similarly air passages are formed in the lower part of the transverse wall. Air is supplied above the grate through passages in the front and rear walls. Baffle walls 23 protect the adjacent drums and tubes from the fire. The course of the furnace gases is indicated by arrows.
