The boiler, as shown, is composed of . twocylindrical sections 5 and 6 connected by aninterposed segmental section 7. f 45 The lower section, 5, has an annular'wate jacket 8 around a space 9 which constitutes the combustion chamber of the boiler, the upper section has a similar water jacket 10 enlargedat the upper portion of the section. to provide a dome 50 or steam space 12, and the middle section has a segmental water jacket 13 which at its ends connects with the water jacket of the lower section, as at 14, and which connects with the jacket of the upper section at its points of intersection 55 with said jacket as indicated at 15.

The combustion space of. the boiler is divided by a bridge'25 into the main combustion chamber-26 havinga grate 27 and a smaller auxiliary combustion chamber'28 having a grate.29. The last mentioned chamber is utilized .as an incinerator. for. burning trash, garbage and other refuse matter. g 1
a The .body of the boiler as described, has at its ends, .frontand rear- plates 30 and 31 provided with openings that register with the several flues. Doors 32 and 33 hinged on-the plates, 'nor-' mally closetheopenings and aiford ready access to the flues for cleaning or other purposes. A chute 34 closed by a flap-door 35 gives access to the incinerator.
Doors 36 and 3'7 maybe opened or closed to regulate'thedraft, and doors 38 give access to the main combustion chamber for the supply of fuel to the grate 27. It will be apparent that oil or gas burners may, ifso desired, be substituted for the grates. l
Water is supplied to the interconnected water jackets through an inlet 39 in the bottom-portion, 95 of the jacket of the lower section, and the generated steamescapes from the steam-space through an opening 40 inrthe top of the upper section. Small openings at the rear end of the boiler, are provided for the purpose of .cleaning the water 100 jackets, if desired. 1
The operation of the boiler. will be readily understood The' heating-flues provides a zigzag course for heat and products of combustion, within the comparativelyenarrow :jackets .which 105 constitute the water-space .of. the boiler. The boiler thus has an unusually large expansekof surface for heat-interchange, and steam is rapidly generated with the minimum expenditure of fuel.
Inasmuch as the surfaces of the flues are curved, no stay-bolts are required and scale formed upon the surfaces will fall to the bottom of the fines to be removed through the openings at the ends of the flues. The water supplied through the inlet rises transverse to the course of the heat and smoke through the flues, and every part of the structure is accessible from outside the boiler by the provision of the several doors.
In Figure 4, the full-line arrows indicate the direction of the water and the broken-line arrows, the course of the heat and products of combustion.
Patent is:
1. A boiler composed of a cylindrical lower section having an annular water-jacket around a combustion-space, a cylindrical upper section,
having an annular water jacket, inclusive of a steam-space and having a smoke-outlet in connection with the space inside the jacket, and a middle-section having a segmental annular water-jacket interconnected with the jackets of theother sections, the spaces inside the jackets of .the middle and upper sections providing fines for the passage of heat and. products of com bustionirom the combustion space to the smokeoutlet, the three sections being horizontal.
2. A boiler composed'of a cylindrical lower section having an annular water-jacket around a combustion space, a cylindrical upper section, having'an annular water jacket, inclusive of a steam-space and'having a smoke-outlet in connection with the space inside the jacket, and a middle-section having a segmental annular water-jacket interconnected with the jackets of the other sections, the spaces inside the jackets of the middle and upper sections providing flues for the passage of heat and products of combustion from the combustion space to the smokeoutlet, which have openings at the ends of the boiler, and doors closing the openings, the three sections being horizontal.
3. A boiler composed of a cylindical lower section having an annular water-jacket around a combustion space, a cylindrical .upper section, having an annular water-jacket, inclusive of a steam-space and having a smoke-outlet in con-. nection with the space inside the jacket, and a middle section having a segmental annular wa ter-jacket interconnected with the jackets .of the. other sections, the spaces inside the jackets of the middle and upper sections providing flues for the passage of heat and products of combustion from the combustion space to the smokecutlet, the dues and the combustion-space having openings at the ends of the boiler,'and doors closing the openings,.the three sections being 2' horizontal.

A boiler composed of a cylindrical lower section having an annular water-jacket around a combustion space, a cylindrical. upper section, having an annular water jacket, inclusive of a steam-space and having a smoke-outlet in connection with the space inside the jacket, and a middle-sectionhaving a segmental annular water-jacket interconnected with the jackets. of the other sections, a lengthwise extending neck connecting the jackets of the upper and lower sections, a neck" connecting the jackets of the middle and upper sections, the spacesbetween the jackets of the middle and upper sections and the necks, providing fines for the passage of heat and products of combustion from the combustion space to the smoke outlet, the three sections being horizontal.
5. A boiler composed of a cylindrical lower section having an annular water-jacket around a combustion space, a cylindrical upper section, having an annular water jacket, inclusive of a steam-space and having a smoke outlet in connection with the space inside the jacket, and a middle-section having a segmental annular water-jacket interconnected with the jackets oi the other sections, a lengthwise extending neck connecting the jackets of the upper and lower ;sections, a neck connecting the jackets of the middle and upper sections, the spaces between the jackets of the middle and upper sections and the necks, providing flues for the passage of heat and products of combustion, and the jackets and the neckshaving ends distanced from the front and rear walls of the boiler, to connect the flues in-a zig-zag. course between the combustion'space and the smoke outlet, the three sections being horizontal.

A boiler comprising a cylindrical section having a water jacket around a combustion space, asection having a water jacket and a steam--, space, anda section having a water jacket interl communicating with the water jackets of the I05 other sections, in intersecting relation to the jack' et of one of saidsections-the spaces of the sections bounded'by their jackets being closedat the' ends of the sections and intercommunicating at opposed ends to'provide a continuous flue for the passage of heat and products of combustion fromthe combustion space toa point of escape. 1

A boiler comprising a section having a water jacket around a combustion space,.a section having a waterjacket and a steam-space, and. a middle section having segmental water jackets intercommunicating with the water jackets ofthe other sections, and a connection between the jackets of the'first and second mentioned sections 12D intermediate of the jackets of the. middlesection, the spaces of the sectionsbounded by their jackets being. closed at the ends of the sections and intercommunicating atopposed ends to provide a continuousfiue for the passage of heat and products. of combustion from. the combustion space to a point of escape;-
