My invention relates to hot water or steam boilers. y
In accordance with my invention, I provide a boiler embodying a lower double walled section, constituting a lire box. A tube boiler is mounted upon this double walled section, and is supported thereby. rIhe lower section is hollow and receives the water and is in communication with the l" water space ot' the tube boiler. The arrangement is such that the maximum heat exchange is effected.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose ot illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l0 designates a lower double walled section or shell, constitutingthe fire box oit' the boiler. This double walled section may be formed of material, such as steel or cast iron. This double walled section is suitably mounted upon a concrete foundation 11 and a bridge wall 12 is provided, affording a tire box 13 and combustion chamber, 14. The fire box may be equipped with a grate 15 ot the usual construction with an ash pit 16. therebelow. The double walled section is provided with a fuel door opening 17, to be covered by a suitable door 18.
The lower double walled section 10 is provided in its ends, and at the topsI thereof, with semi-circular recesses 18 receiving and supporting the cylindrical shell or casing 19, of a fire tube type boiler. Substantially one-halt of this shell projects above the recesses 18, as shown.
Arranged within the shell 19 and suitably spaced from the ends thereon, are flue plates 2O and 21, spaced from the ends or heads 22 and 23 respectively, as shown. rIhe tubes or flues 24 are held within openings in the heads 2O and 21, in the usual manner. The head 21 is spaced from the head 23 providing a smoke or gas chamber 24, at the torward end of the boiler. 'Ihe head 20 is spaced from the head 22 `forming a. smoke or gas chamber 25, vin communication with the upper set o1 tubes 24, andthe bottom of this chamber 25 is closed by a horizontal bridge 26, passing between the upper and lower sets of tubes and separating the same. The shell 19 is provided with an opening 27 and adjacent to the horizontal bridge 26, whereby gases'may pass from the chamber 14 into and through the lower sets of tubes, at the rearcnds thereof. These gases, of
course, pass forwardly through the lower set-s of tubes and then discharge into the chamber 24 and then pass rearwardly through the upper set of tubes 24, and linally discharged into the chamber or com partment 25 and then pass into the stack or chimney 28. Both heads 22 and 23 are detachable, providing access to the ends-of all the tubes, for clearing, or Jfor rolling the ends ot the tubes, whereby all the tubes may be removed without getting into the fire box.
The heated water from the sides of the double walled section 10 passes through risers 29, which lead into the shell 19, be-
tween the heads 2O and 21 exteriorly ot the tubes 24. All of the tubes are of the same maximum length, and the heated gases pass forwardlythrough the lower tubes and rearl wardly through the upper tubes, throughout their entire length, before discharging into the stack, thus eIecting the maximum heat exchange.
Cold Awater may be supplied to the lower portion of the double walled section 10, through an inlet'pipe 30. Steam passes from the shell 19, between the heads 20 and 21, through the pipes 31.
In Figure 5, I have shown the double walled section 10 as formed in two parts 10, which are adapted to be connected by means of angle irons 1l which may be boltedttogether. The parts 10 are preferably formed separate so that they have no communication with each other. This construct-ion is preferred when the boiler unit is to be built in a larger form as it permits the lower section to be separated in two parts, for the convenience of handling and installation.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention, herewith shown anddescribed, are to be taken as preferred examples of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the sub joined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A. boiler oiC the character described, comprising a double walled lower section having a fire box at its rear end and a combustion chamber at its forward end, said `double walled lower section being provided at the tops of its ends with substantially semi-cylindrical transverse recesses, a cylindrical shell supported at its opposite ends within the substantially semi-cylindrical recesses, the entire area of the ends of the cylindrical shell being accessible from the exterior of the ends of the double walled lower section, tube heads arranged within said shell and spaced from the ends of the same forming smoke boxes, tubes of the same length extending between and carried by the tube heads, detachable outer heads secured to the ends of said cylindricalshell and covering the smoke boxes, a. substantially horizontal bridgewall arranged within the forward smoke box and dividing the same into upper and lower smoke boi; sections, the upper set of tubes communicating with the upper smoke box section and the llower set of Atubes communicating with the lower smoke box section, said cylindrical shell being provided in its forward portion with an opening to establish communication between the combustion chamber and the lower smoke box section, a stack leading into the top of the upper smoke box section, the gases passing from the gas chamber rearwardly through the lower set of tubes and forwardly through the upper set of tubes and discharging into the-stack, means of communication between the interior of the double walled. lower section and the interior of the cylindrical shell, inlet means for the lower section, and outlet means for the cylindrical shell, the outer detachable heads providing access to the opposite ends of the upper and lower sets of tubes.
