Abstract
5298. Roe, C., Roe, H., and Knight, H. March 4. Motor road vehicles.- Relates to variable-speed toothed driving-gear, especially applicable to motor cars, and also comprises means for putting the driving-belt out of action and applying a brake. Fig. 2 shows the gear in sectional plan. The intermediate shaft a is supported by a frame o capable of being turned about the axle j. By thus turning this frame, the belt l driving one or other of the pulleys b, c can be slackened. The frame o carries a brake block which at the same time is applied to a brake drum on the axle. The toothed gearing is of the epicyclic type, in which pinions f, f carried by the pulley b gear on one side with a toothed wheel e and on the other side with a toothed wheel g. The wheel e is rigidly connected with the pulley c. The shaft a is furnished with a key d, and is capable of being made to slide lengthwise in its bearings by the linkwork k, r, q so as to engage with either the wheel g or wheel e, or with both. At the same time bolts h and h<1> are slid in or out of engagement with the wheels g and e. By this means different speeds are obtained. Reversal is effected by shifting the belt l on to the pulley c by the fork u, which at the same time holds the pulley b by the brake block u<2>. In order to lubricate the pinion teeth, the pinions are hollow and contain lubricant, which can be squeezed out in small quantities by screwing up the plugs closing the cavities.
