Abstract

10,898. Mathot, R. May 12. Lathes.- Relates to the transmission gear of a motor road vehicle, applicable also to lathes. A chain-wheel 30, Fig. 6, and a cone pulley 27 mounted loosely on an intermediate shaft are driven respectively b y means o f a chain and a belt from a corresponding chain-wheel 29 and cone pulley 28 on the motor shaft. The cone pulley 27 is fitted with a number of internal spindles carrying pinions 34, 33 which gear respectively with a pinion 24 and with a pinion 32 cast in one with the chain-wheel 30, the pinion 24 being carried by a sleeve forming part of the casing of the ordinary epicyclic gearing 23 on the intermediate shaft. The intermediate shaft is connected by means of chain gearing with the main driving-shaft. Each of the pinions 34, 33 gears with different parts of the breadth of the pinions 24, 32. The sizes of the wheels 24, 32, 33, 34 are arranged so that the vehicle is moved forwards, stopped, or moved backwards according to the position of the bett on the cone pulley 27. The pinions 33, 34 may be mounted on the face of the chainwheel 30. Bevel gearing may be substituted for the chain-gearing 29, 30. In a modification, the cone pulleys 26, 27, Fig. 8, are in direct contact through the intervention of a travelling belt 28, and spur-wheels 29, 30 are substituted for the chain gearing ; the differential epicyclic gearing is mounted on the driving-axle, and is driven by one chain from the intermediate shaft. The ends of the spindles of the spur-wheels 33, 34 turn in bronze plugs secured in the pulley covers and bored out to receive lubricators. The hub of the cone pulley 27 is lubricated through two tubes arranged at right-angles to one another within the pulley and communicating respectively with the side of the pulley and with the hub, the cone pulley being sometimes partially or wholly filled with oil.
