Mechanical stoking. - In mechanical stokers of the type where the fuel is fed from a hopper by a reciprocating plunger in a. cylinder provided at the end adjacent the hopper with packing to prevent the leakage of coal-dust past the plunger, the packing 25 consists of a transversely-split resilient ring of internal diameter smaller than the diameter of the plunger 27. The resiliency of the ring 25 may be supplemented by resilient means such as springs 30, 32, provided with adjusting means. The ring and its groove may have inclined engaging surfaces, so that the pressure of the ring on the plunger is increased when the piston is moving away from the hopper. The ring may also have a bevelled edge to permit of the easy insertion of the plunger in the cylinder.
