Mechanical stoking.-The connecting-rod for actuating the plunger of a crank-driven fuel-feeding mechanism for an underfeed stoker is constructed to buckle when the plunger meets with abnormal resistance during its feeding- stroke and to resume its normal straight form on the return stroke. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the plunger 8 is actuated by a crank 10 through a connecting-rod made in two sections 14, 16, hinged together as shown in detail in Figs. 6 and 7 by a lap joint and a pin 20. The thrust in the connecting-rod is transmitted through the two abutting shoulders 22, 24 on the sections 14, 16, the shoulders being so placed that the thrust does not pass through the hinge pin 20, so that when the plunger 8 meets with an obstruction such as 36, Fig. 4, the connecting-rod buckles, against the action of a spring 26 acting on a plate 28. On continued rotation, the connecting-rod resumes its normal position, but buckles each time the plunger encounters the obstruction, till the obstruction releases itself or is removed by the operator. Ad. justment of the spring 26 is provided by a setscrew 34 and a plate 30, Fig. 7.
