Abstract

Mechanical stoking.- A device for actuating a mechanical stoker so as to supply fuel to the furnace at predetermined intervals, which intervals may be varied by hand-operated means, consists, as applied to a mechanical stoker of the underfeed tvpe, of a vertical crank-shaft 6, Fig. 1, connected to the coal piston 3 for feeding fuel to the furnace from the hopper 2, and driven at its lower end from bevel-gearing connected through a clutch 16 with a shaft 15. The shaft 15 is driven through bevel-gearing 61, 62, Figs. 1 and 2, from a main shaft 40 carrying the fast pulley 18 and loose pulley 19. The driving - belt is so disposed on the pulleys that when shifted on tu the fast pulley it partly overlaps the loose pulley and keeps it in constant motion. The loose pulley is connected through gearing 21, 22 and a crank 24 and rod 23 with ratchet gear, provided with a mask 27 operated by a hand lever 28 to control the time of revolution of the ratchet-wheel 26. A cam 30 on the ratchetwheel engages with a member 33 on a counterweighted belt - shifting lever 31 which operates the belt - shifter 20 to throw the belt on to the fast pulley and start the stoker. A cam 35 on a wheel 63 driven from the shaft 15 engages with a member 34 on the lever 31 and returns the belt on to the loose pulley again. In the modified form of actuating and controlling device shown in Fig. 3, the loose pulley 19 is mounted on a bush 41 provided with a worm 42 engaging a wormwheel 43 which is connected by a rod 45 to the pawl 25 having a counterweight 49. The ratchet-wheel 26 is provided with an enlarged tooth 50 which projects above the mask 27 and is engaged by the pawl 25 when the cam 30 is turned so far forward that it strikes against the cam 51 on the belt shifter 20, the tooth 50 being moved forward a distance equal to the stroke of the pawl, and the rod 20 being moved forward until the cam 30 is released from contact with the cam 51. The movement of the rod 20 shifts the helt and compresses a spring 52, and allows a pivoted catch 55 to engage the member 54 and retain the rod 20 in this position. The catch 55 is released by a cam 57 on a worm-wheel 58 which is driven by a worm 59 on the shaft 15, and the driving belt is brought back on to the loose pulley by the spring 52. In the stoker shown in Fig. 1, the coal piston 3 is connected to a carrier rod 7 provided, with projections 8 on its upper surface. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also a carrier bar in which the forward end is bevelled and the lower surface is provided with small lugs to facilitate the movement of the bar in the coal trough. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
