Hopper-charging apparatus, controlling.-Relates to hopper-charging apparatus of the type having a conveyer trough with a number of shoots, through which coal is delivered to the hoppers, there being a swinging plate or door arranged over the last shoot to stop the supply when the shoots are full. A second swinging plate is suspended in front of the first, which it operates by being forced into contact with it. In the apparatus shown, a main swinging plate B suspended from a shaft b controls the valve c of a cylinder C, which, through a lever c<2>, stops and restarts the feed-screw A. In front of the plate B a second plate E is suspended from a shaft e, which is supported by links pivoted on the shaft b. A friction clutch b<2> is mounted on one end of the shaft b, the loose member being oscillated by a lever b<3> connected to some constantly reciprocating part of the furnace. This helps to return the plate B to its normal position. A lug e<2> on the lever b<3> is connected to the shaft e, so that the plate E has a vertically reciprocating movement which causes the coal to fall freely down the shoot.
