Abstract

27,057. Marcotty, F. Oct. 10, [Convention date]. Mechanical stoking.-In an underfeed stoker of the kind in which the fuel is fed on to the grate by a rotary drum, the drum is driven through friction gearing by a reciprocating rod during its stroke in one direction only, such stroke being effected through yielding means, such as a spring or weight, arranged in the length of the rod or as an extension thereof to prevent danger or breakage when the drum is obstructed by hard or large pieces of fuel. Fuel is fed bv the shoot 4, Fig. 1, to the rotary drum 5, which is provided with pushers 34, Fig. 3, moving between walls 9, 10 forming pockets from which the fuel is fed on to the grate as the drum rotates. The pushers are mounted on axes 33 carrying arms which are provided with rollers engaging with slotted cams which cause oscillation of the pushers. The drum is provided on one side with a ring having a surface with which friction blocks 21, Fig. 6, engage, the blocks being mounted on links 20 carried by diametrically opposite arms 19 of the lever 18 which is actuated by the reciprocating rod 27. The blocks 21 engage with the drum ring during motion in one direction only of the rod 27 so that the drum is given an intermittent motion. The rod 27 is operated from the axle 29 of the locomotive through gearing 23, 24, 25, Fig. 1, and shaft 26 carried by a forked lever mounted on the spindle 45. The shaft 26 carries an eccentric 28, embraced by a ring mounted on ball bearings, and serving to actuate a lever 13, which is pivoted at 42 and connected to the rod 27. The rod 27 is moved by the eccentric 28 in one direction so as to extend the spring 41, while motion is not communicated to the drum, but as soon as the eccentric moves so as to allow the lever 13 to oscillate in the opposite direction the spring 41 returns the rod 27 and rotates the drum. To regulate the stroke of the rod 27, 'the lever carrying the eccentric 29 may be raised or lowered, to vary the angle of oscillation of the lever 13, by a rod 14 through a bell-crank lever 16 and rod 17 connected to a nut 56 adapted to traverse a guide by means of a screw 57 operated by a crank handle 58. In the modification shown in Fig. 11, the eccentric 28 is arranged on the opposite side of the lever 13, and the spring 41 is interposed in the rod 27. The non-driving stroke of the rod 27 is effected by a spring 62. The spring shown in Fig. 1 may be replaced by a weight connected by a rope to the lower end of the lever 13.
