H.- J. PETERSON.
REGISTERING DEVICE FOR AUTOMATIC STOKERS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 7, 1913.

HENRY J. PETERSON, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
REGISTERING- DEVICE FOR AUTOMATIC STOKERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Registering Devices for Au-' tomatic Stokers, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in actuating mechanism for registers by means of which the exact amount and weight offuel such as coal which is fed into a furnace through the medium of any of the well-known automatic stokers. now on the market may be determined and has for an object to provide simple and efii'cient means of the character indicated adapted for ready attachment to the stoker ram-case by which the amount and weight of coal fed by the several strokes of the ram is accurately computed.
- Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of the ram-case with hopper affixed and represented as attached to a furnace, broken away, the inventionbeing likewise illus trated in section and secured in place upon the case; and
Fig.2 is a perspective view of the actuating mechanism attached to a register.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing, one of the several wellknown forms of automatic stokers is sectionally illustrated for feeding fuel such as coal into a furnace'which as there shown is partially represented by the wall 10. Secured in any desired manner to such wall is a ram-case designed to feed at one end through the wall into the furnace and comprising a cylindrical or other shaped body 11 terminating at its free end in an enlarged chamber 12 in which a piston 13 is adapted to be reciprocated by any preferred power,
for instance steam. A piston rod 14 is secured at one extremity to the piston and at the other extremity is operatively attached to a ram 15 here shown as of hollow construction and of increased size at its single open end remote from the'furnace wall, a peripheral shoulder 16 being formed at the intersection of the reduced and enlarged p0r Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 7 1918. Serial No. 233,010.

porting a registering device 21 of any apv proved design for indicating through the sight opening 22 formed in the housing the number of feeding strokes made by the ramat any and all times. A pair of lugs 23, only one being shown, depend from the shelf 20 and form journals for a shaft 24 about which is secured a bifurcated rock arm 25 having a roller 26 riding and held by gravity upon the reduced portion of the ram and adapted to be tripped by the shoulder 16 during the reciprocations of such ram. A second rock arm 27 is likewise connected to the shaft 24 for movement therewith and operatively connects at its projecting end with a register actuating arm 28 through the medium of a member 29 pivotally attached at its opposite ends to the rock arm 27 and actuating arm-28 as clearly shown in the drawing.
No claim is made'to any specific form of.
-whereby movement of the arm 28 in one direction properly effects the actuation of the registering mechanism employed while reverse movement of the said arm 28 in no wise actuates such mechanism.
The operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description and, assuming that the number of pounds of coal per ram-stroke is known, the average constant feed being, for instance 15.75 ounds, it will be appreciated that throng the employment of my attachment the exact amount of coal in pounds required to maintain the fire or which are fed into the furnace during any given interval of time may be readily and accurately computed.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent y 1. The combination with a reciprocating ram of an automatic stoker provided with a registering device, of mechanism connected with said register adapted to operate the same and having a constant rolling contact upon said ram to effect the operation of said register during the movement of the ram in one direction.
2. In a stoker, the combination with a registering device having an operating shaft, of a casing, a ram reciprocable therein, a housing on said casing, said housing containing said registerin device, a lever pivoted in the housing an provided at its free end with aroller adapted to drop v. by gravity in the path of travel of the ram to be operated thereby, and link-connections between said pivoted lever and the operating shaft of the registering device. v
3. In a stoker, the combination with a registering device having an operating shaft, of a casing, a ram reciprocable therein, a housing on said casing, said housing.
containing said registering device, a rock shaft journaled in the housing below the registering device, a lever keyed thereon and provided at its free end with a roller adapted to drop by gravity into the ram case in the path of travel of the ram to be operated thereby, a second lever keyed to said rock shaft, link connections between said second lever and the operating shaft of the registering device whereby actuation of the registering device .is effected through the reciprocation of the ram.
4. The combination with the reciprocating ram of an automatic stoker provided with a register, ofmec'hanism for actuating the register so disposed between said ram and said register as to be continuously engaged and supported by the reciprocating ram, said ram having means cooperating with said mechanism for actuating said register. a
