Be it known that l, An'rnon C. Nansen, a citizen of the United States, residin at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and Estate of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stoker's, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to fuel feeders or stokers and more particularly to the classof coal feeder mechanism for boats, locomotives or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a stoker wherein the fuel will be automatically fed to the fire box of an engine thereby avoiding the hand shoveling fireman as is usual.
Another object of" the invention is the provision of a stoker wherein the fuel will a prevented from choking the hopper or feed pipe so that the feeding of the fuel will not be interrupted during the working of the Stoker, or while being actuated from the steam in the engine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a stoker of this character which is simple in construction, reliable, positive and efficient in its operation and inexpensive in manufacture as well as the running thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and ointed out in the claims hereunto appended? In the drawingsz'Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the stoker constructed in accordance with the invention showing a portion of the fire box ofthe engine. This cylinder C is located at one end of the feed cylinder B while the opposite end of the latter communicates with the fire box A and connected to the piston E is a piston rod F on the outer endof which is mounted a shovel head G integrally formed with a tube form hood H which is adapted to telescope over the piston cylinder C, the head G and hood- H being designed to work forwardly and backwardly within the cylinder B for a purpose presently described.

Communicating with the cylinder 3 at the top thereof is a forwardly inclined teed hopper K into which is adapted to be delivered coal in any suitable mannen At the discharge end of the hopper K is arranged a swinging door L which is closed on the advancement of the head G toward the fire box while on thereverse movement of the head G the door L will automatically drop to open position thereby admitting coal from the hopper K into the cylinder B for the subsequent delivery thereof to the fire hon. Suitably journaled exteriorly on the opposite walls of the hopper K are spaced shafts lid to which are fixed sprocket wheels N having trained thereover endless chains 0, the walls of the hopper K being cut away to permit the chains to travel interiorly and exteriorly thereof. Each of these chains O has one-half stretch thereof provided with fingers P while connected to a pair of shafts M are sprocket wheels Q over which is trained an endless chain It the latter being adapted to operate the chains 0 in unison, so that one stretch thereof the teeth P will work within the hopper K for positively feeding the fuel from the hopper into the cylinder B, the disposition of the teeth P on the chains 0 being such as to travel within the hopper K at the time only when the door L is open and on the closing of the door the other stretchers of the chain 0 devoid of has , nism are regulated by the' motors so thatthe teeth P will travel interiorly of the hopper K thereby becoming ineffective for the feedin of the fuel, from the hopper'K into the cy inder B.
One of the shafts M has suitable connection with any desirable ty e of motor for the driving of the chains to agitate the fuel within the hopper so as to avoid the choking ofthe hopper and thereby inter- 1gupting the feeding of the fuel to the fire ox.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted. It is to be understood'that the valve in the steam chest can be regulated so that at one time the stoker will throw the coal way into the firebox and at another time not so far, thereby assuring an even fire.- Furthermore, the stoker and feeding, mechathey will work in respective order, that is to say, when the stoker is passive the feeding mechanism will be at a standstill, and the motor that starts the stoker should be operative when the motor is active for operating .the feeding mechanism,
What is claimed is a 1. A Stoker comprising a delivery cylinder adapted for communication with a fire box, a door hinged to the'cylinder for normally closing communication between it and the fire box, a feed pipe inclined toward the fire box and communicating with the cylinder at the top thereof, a hinged door supported in: ternally of the cylinder for closing communication between the feed pipe and the same and normally gravitated to open position, a 7 piston cylinder oi a diameter less than the internal diameter of the clelivery cylinder and fixed centrally interiorly of the same,
a hollow head slidably'telescoped upon the piston cylinder and working within, the delivery cylinder for movement longitudinally thereof, 'a piston working Within the piston cylinder and connected'directly to the hollow head, means for supplying and exhausting fluid to and from the said piston cylinder for actuating the piston therein, and a curved nose formed on the head and projected therefrom for raising the secondnamed door and subsequently opening the first-named door on movement of the head in one direction.

A stoke-r comprising a delivery cylinder hollow head slidably telescoped upon the piston cylinder and working within the delivery cylinder for movement longitudinally thereof, a piston working within the piston cylinder and connected directly to the hollow head, means for supplying and exhausting fluid to and from the said piston cylinder for actuating the piston therein, a curved nose formed on the head and projected therefrom for raising the secondnamed door and subsequently-opening the first-named door on movement of the head in one direction, and means Within the feed pipeior positively feeding fuel therefrom to the first-named cylinder.
