Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 17, 1919. Serial No. 283,233.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D101: GRonNEwoLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kiel, in the county of Kingfisher and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Elevators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in grain elevators, and has relation more particularly to a device of this gen eral character of a pneumatic type, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same is particularly adapted for use in connection with vehicles.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a casing having arranged therein a fan or blower together with means within the casing for agitating grain as discharged within the casing to facilitate the conveyance of the grain. I
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved grain elevator whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is aview in side elevation with a portion broken away of an elevator constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view taken in elevation of my improved elevator at the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1 with certain of the parts omitted;
Fig. 3 is a'sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing F denotes a frame whi h serves s a support for the casing C and in communication with the casing C at one side of its center is the upwardly directed discharge member 1, and suitably engaged with the member 1 and in communication therewith is a conveyer pipe P which may be constructed as desired, and which includes at its discharging end a goose neck N. The upper wall of the gooseneck N is provided with the perforations 2 through which weed seed or the like discharges when the elevator is in operation, but of a size to prevent the passage therethrough of the grain. Suitably en "aged with the goose neck N is a spout with which the openings 2 communicate, so that the seed, dust, or the like may be readily collected to prevent indiscriminate scattering thereof.
The casing C at its axial center and at one side thereof is provided with a supplemental casing C which is also in communication with the discharge member 1 as indicated at a in Figs. 1 and 4E, and the outer wall of the casing C at substantially its axial center is provided with an opening 3 in communication with a spout or tube 4 adapted for connection as at 5 with the discharge end portion of a vehicle body or other source of grain supply. Said outer wall of the casing C is also provided with the air ports 6. Disposed through the casing C at its axial center and extending within the casing C is a shaft 7 adapted to be rotated in any desired manner, but preferably through the medium of a belt passing around a pulley 8 fixed to the outer end portion of the shaft.
Carried by the shaft and arranged within the casing C are the fan blades 9 which, upon rotation of the shaft 7 create a current of air upwardly through the pipe P and through the neck N to elevate the grain discharged within the casing C. In order to facilitate the elevation of the grain, the shaft 7 withinthe casing C has suitably ailixed thereto the agitating blades 10 which blades tend to throw the grain upwardly through the discharge member 1.
The outer face of the casing C at substantially its axial center is provided with an air inlet opening 11 intersected by a bar 12 and which bar 12 affords a support for the shaft 7. The shaft 7 is further supported by the opposite wall of the casing C.
Coacting with the opening 11 is a vertically movable slide valve l4: Which operates to regulate the admission of air within the casing C as the occasions of practice may require, and as may be necessitated by the character of the grain. This valve 14; coacts with the vertically disposed guides 15 secured to the outer wall of the casing C and the valve is provided at substantially its longitudinal center with an. upstanding extension o.- arm 16 through which is disposed a bolt l 7 or the like adapted for engagement with any one of the vertically spaced series of openings 18 provided in the outer wall of the casing C so that said valve 14: may be positively held in different positions.
The outer face of the casing C at its lower portion is provided with an opening 19 normally closed by a removable plate 20. This opening 19 permits the grain within the casing C to be drawn out in the event the agitator or blades 10 within said casing C should fail to operate,
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that grain elevator constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carryil'ig out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: 7
An elevator of the class described comprising a casing provided in its peripheral portion with an upwardly directed discharge member, and with an air opening in a side face, a second casing arranged at one side of the first casing, and carried thereby, said second casing being in communication with the discharge member, a shaft rotatably supported by the first named casing and extending therethrough and partially within the second casing, said shaft being arranged in substantially the center of the air inlet opening of the first named casing and extending therethrough exteriorly of the casing, said second casing in its outer side face and at a point in alinement with the shaft being provided with an'opening, a conduit secured at one end to said second casing and discharging therein through the opening in the second casing, said outer face of the second casing at points in close proximity to the opening therein being provided with air ports, blades arranged within the second casing and carried by the portion of the shaft within said second casing, and fan blades within the first named casing and secured to said shaft, the portion of the shaft exterior of the first named casing being provided with driving means. i
