To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALBERT G. ELvIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plandome, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, and ADAM B. FAHNESTOGK, a citizen of the United States,,residing at Great Neck, in said county and Etate, have jointly invented a certain newfand useful Improvement in Mechanical Stoker's, of which improvement the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to appliances for mechanically conveying fuel from a supply receptacle to the firing opening of a locomotive or other steam boiler furnace, and supplying it thereto as re uired to maintain combustion therein, and its object is to provide simple, effective, and reliable means for feeding fuel, at desired rate, to a crushing mechanism by which it is reduced to proper size for firing, and thereafter delivering the fuel, in such condition, to the device by which it is projected into the boiler furnace.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is-a view, partly in side elevation, and partly in vertical longitudinal central section, of the adjoining portions of a coupled locomotive and tender, illustrating an application of our invention; Fig. 2, a partial plan or top view, on an enlarged scale, of the same; andFig; 3, a partialvertical longitudinal central section, on a further enlarged scale, through the fuel feeder trough "and the crusher casing.
In the practiceof our invention, referring descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, a tender, indicated as a whole by A, and having a coal bin or fuel receptacle, a, is coupled, in the ordinary manner, by a draw bar, C, to a locomotive, indicated as a whole by B, the firebox, b, of which is supplied with fuel from the coal bin of thetender,by a mechanical stoker, the construction and manner of operation of which, so far as is necessary to clearly explain our invention, are as follows:
A longitudinally extending open topped fuel feeder trough or channel 1, the sides of which are inwardly and downwardly inclined, is located below an opening, a, at the .forward end of'the coal bin, a, and a feeder bar, 2, is fitted to be reciprocated in the cen-' tral portion of said trough. The curved face of the crusher jaw, 4, 1s provided with a plurality of teeth, 4?, which, in the movements of the jaw, work between teeth, 3, on the inner wall of the crusher casing. The shaft, 4, of the vibratory crusher jaw, is swung about its axial line, by a motor, 5, the shaft, 5, of which is coupled, through suitable intermediate connections, which do not form part of our present invention, and which include a unis versally jointed shaft, 5",v a shaft, 5, gears, 5 5 5 5 and a connecting rod, 5*, coupled to a crank arm, 4*, fixed on the shaft, 4.
Reciprocating movement, variable in degree,is imparted to the feeder bar and at-' tached feeding plates, by the vibratory crusherj aw, l, which carries, centrally at its upper side, an arm, i in which there is v a formed a curved recess, 43 which, in the rearward swing of the jaw, isadapted to engage a correspondingly curved bearing, 2", at the front end of the feeder bar, 2, and impart rearward movement thereto. In the forward swing of the crusher aw, the arm, l abuts on a pin, 2, which is fitted to slide in slots, 2 formed in arms, 2 fixed to the feeder bar. A greater or lesser degree of traverse will be imparted to the feeder bar by the crusher jaw, proportionately to. the decrease or increase, respectively, of the distance between the axis of the pin, 2 and the bearing, 2 and when said pin is brought to the bottom of the slots, 2, no movement will be imparted to the feeder bar. 7
The adjustment of the pin, 2 in the slots, is manually effected by movement of a latch, 6, journaled on the pin, and adapted to be engaged with any one of a plurality of teeth,

2*, which are formed in an inclined series, on the front end wall of the fuel feeder bar. When the latch stands below the lowest of the teeth, 2 the pin stands at the bottom of the slots, and the distance between its axis and the bearing, 2, is so great that no move ment will be imparted to the feeder bar in the vibratory movements 7 of the crusher. l/Vhen the latch is engagedwith the uppermost of the teeth, the maximum degree of traverse will be imparted to the feeder bar, and the traverse will be varied proportionately to the adjustment of the latch in the set of teeth. The pin, 2 is pressed upwardly in the slots .by springs, 6 as permitted by the adjustments of the latch, and movement is imparted to the latch, to force the pin downwardly, against the tension of the springs, by a manually operated regulating rod, 6*, coupled at one end to an arm,6, on a rock shaft, 6 the opposite arm, 6, of which carries a roller, 6 working in a slot at the lower side 'of the latch. In the operation of a mechanical stoker in which our invention is applied, fuel drops from the forward portion of the coal bin of the tender, into the subjacent fuel feeder trough, in which the feeder bar and attached fuel feeding plates are reciprocated, as hereinbefore described. Ateach forward movement of the bar and plates, fuel which falls into the troughis pushed up and over the inclined faces of the fixed feeding plates, and in the rearward movement of the bar and its plates, a further supply of fuel drops into the trough, and is similarly advanced at the, next succeeding forward movement. The fuel which is thus moved forward, drops into the open top of the crusher casing, and it will be seen that the amount of fuel supplied thereto will be controlled by the extent of the traverse of the feeder bar, which, as before described, may be varied or stopped, as required.
Such lumps. of fuel as may be too large to be properly fired will beheld by the teeth at the bottom of the wall of the crusher casing, during the forward movement of the vibratory jaw, and by reason of the eccentricity of said jaw, will be crushed to proper size by said jaw in its rearward swing.

The conveying and fuel projecting mechanisms may be of any suitable known construction, and as they do not, in and of themselves, form part of our present invention, they need not herein be further described than to note that, in the application of our invention which is herein exemplified, the prepared fuel is de livered by the conveyor, 7*, to an elevator casing, 8, in which charges of it are successively raised to the level of the firing opening by an elevator, S, and delivered to two swinging fuel carrying and throwing shovels, 9, by which the charges of fuel are mechanically projected into the firebox, in the manner of hand firing. The eonveyer, elevator, and shovels, are actuated, inpropcr relation and sequence, by the motor, 5, through suitable known connections, which do not form part of our present invention, and are not, therefore, herein described.

In a mechanical stoker, the combination of a fuel receptacle, having a bottom delivery opening; a feeder trough, located below said opening; a feeding appliance, adapted to be reciprocated in said feeder trough; a crusher casing, located below said feeder trough, and open at its top thereto; a movable crusher jaw, mounted in said on sing; a subjacent conveyer, adapted to receive fuel from said casing, and deliver it, at a point adjacent to a steam boiler furnace; means for projecting the delivered furnace; and a motor, actuating the feeding appliance and the crusher jaw.
2. In a mechanical stoker, the combination of a fuel receptacle, having a bottom delivery opening; a feeder trough, located below said opening; a feeding appliance adapted to be reciprocated in said feeder trough; manually adjustable means for regulating the degree of traverse of the feeding appliance; a crusher casing, located below the feeder trough, and open at its top thereto; a movable crusher jaw, mounted in said casing; a sub j acent conveyer, adapted to receive fuel from said casing, and deliver it at a point adjacent to a steam boiler furnace; means for projecting the delivered fuel into the furnace; and a motor, actuating the feeding appliance and the crusher jaw.
3. In a mechanical stoker, the combination of a fuel receptacle, having a bottom delivery opening; a feeder trough, located below said opening; a feeding appliance, adapted to be reciprocated in said feeder trough; a crusher casing, located below said feeder trough, and open at its top thereto; a movable crusher jaw mounted in said casing; manually regulable means for actuating the feeding appliance by the movements of the crusher jaw; a conveyer, adapted to receive fuel from the crusher casing, and deliver it at a point adjacent to a steam boiler furnace; means for projecting the delivered fuel into the furnace; and a motor, actuating the crusher jaw.

In a mechanical stoker, the combination of a fuel receptacle, having a bottom delivery opening; an open topped feeder trough, located below said opening; a plurality of inclined feeding plates, fixed transversely in said trough; a feeder bar, adapted to be reciprocated in said trough; a plurality of inclined feeding plates, secured to said bar, and alternated in position with the fixed feeding plates; power actuated means for reciprocating the feeder bar; manually adjustable means for regulating the degree of traverse of said bar; a conveyer, adapted to receive fuel from the feeder trough and deliver it at a point adjacent to. a steam boiler furnace; and means for projecting the delivered fuel into the furnace.

In a mechanical stoker, the combination of a fuel receptacle, having a bottom delivery opening; a feeder trough, located below said opening; a feeding appliance, ada ted to be reciprocated in said feeder troug a crusher casing, located below said feeder trough, and open at its top thereto; a vibratory shaft, journaled in said casing; a crusher jaw, fixed on said shaft, and having its face eccentric thereto; a plurality of teeth on said eccentric face; a plurality of teeth on the opposite wall of the crusher casing, alternated in position with the teeth of the jaw; a conveyer, located below, and adapted to receive fuel from, the crusher casing, and to deliver it at a point adjacent to a steam boiler furnace; means for projecting the delivered fuel into the furnace; and a motor, actuating the feeding appliance and the crusher jaw.
7 In a mechanical stoker, the combination of a fuel receptacle, having a bottom delivery opening; a feeder trough, located below said opening; a feeder bar, adapted to be reciprocated in said opening; a crusher casing, located below the feeder trough, and open at its top thereto; a vibratory crusher jaw, journaled in said casing; a bearing, fixed on the feeder bar; a bearing, movable thereon, toward and from the fixed bearing; an arm on the crusher jaw, adapted to abut on one of said bearings in each direction of its traverse, and thereby to actuate the feeder bar; manually operable means for varying the relation of the fixed to the movable bearing; means for delivering fuel from the crusher casing to a steam boiler furnace; and a motor actuating the crusher jaw and said delivery means.
