[Also in Group XII] An underfeed stoker includes a screw adapted to convey fuel from a source of supply to an intermediate position and a ram arranged to feed fuel from said intermediate position towards the underside of the firebed. As shown in Fig. 1, fuel from a hopper 12 is delivered by a screw, not shown, into a space 29 and is pushed by ram 20 along a stationary dead-plate 22. After reaching the end of the dead plate the fuel is propelled up to the firegrate by a second ram 21 coupled to ram 20 so as to reciprocate therewith. Interrupted uni-directional rotation is imparted to the screw so that the rams 20, 21 move away from the fire-bed at the same time as the screw propels fuel forward.
