Abstract
10,088. Livingston, T. L., and Sanderson, J. April 22. Ships' hulls, tanks, and frames; ballasting.-Cargo vessels and the like are constructed in the manner s h o w n by sectional view in Fig. 3, in which the hold space is approximately octagonal in cross-section and the top and bottom corners, on either side, are constructed as ballast tanks. The upper corner compartments are gradually increased in height forward and aft of midships, to enable the capacity of the upper tanks to be maintained where the vessel narrows f o r - ward and aft, and also to allow the hold to be constructed without sheer. The ballast tanks are strengthened by framing bars x, x and cross-ties y. In modified arrangements, the hold space is approximately oval in cross-section, and the ballast tanks may be built as outside appendages to the main structure.
