Abstract

125,675. Eyncourt, Sir E. H. T. d', and Graham, T, Nov. 1, 1917. Frames and framing; hulls.-Relates to ships or the kind described in Specifications 120,467 and 125,170, having straight sides and bottom, in cross-section, meeting in one or more angular bilges. In this type of ship it is proposed to construct the parallel middle body with longitudinal frames 1, Fig 1, braced by widely-spaced transverse frames 2, and the end portions of the ship with closely-spaced straight transverse side and bottom members 3, Figs. I and VI. Where the longitudinal frame system joins the transverse system, curved longitudinal members are used. The water-lines at the bow are formed straight by the use of straight longitudinal ribs or framing; or they may be of the usual curved form at the bow and stern. Fig. II shows the body plan of the vessel, the righthand side being for the tow, and the left-hand side for the stern. Double bottoms are formed by means of transverse floor plates 13, Fig. VI. having straight edges, or by means of upper and lower transverse angle-bars braced on the lattice system. Double or single bottoms may be formed by longitudinal angle-bars braced by transverse floor plates at each transverse frame or intermediately thereof; for single bottoms, one or more of the longitudinal angle-bars are strengthened by intercostal or continuous longitudinal girders, the floor plates being continuous s or intercostal accordingly. In all the proposed arrangements, the straight side frames may be made of equal standard length. Fig. XI shows diagrammatically a form of vessel having the cross-sections formed of straight lines and also with the horizontal sections formed of straight lines both amidships and at the bow and stern. In this case, the straight transverse side members 34, Fig. XIII, are made without bevel, as shown on the right-hand side of the figure, or with a constant bevel, as shown on the the left-hand side.
