CONSTRUCTION OF SHIPS OR BOATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,333, dated May 22, 1900.
Application filed January 22, 1900. Serial No. 2,411. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL GEORGE MAR- TENS,a subject of the King of Norway and Sweden, and a resident of Ohristiania, Norway, but at present residing at 12 Montague Place, Russell Square, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Ships or Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to produce a ship or boat so constructed as to be extremely steady and especially adapted for life-savin g purposes or for working in heavy seas.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, Fig. 2 a plan, and Fig. 3 a central transverse vertical section, of a boat constructed according to this invention.
In constructing thelines of the boat or ship I form each side thereof with two longitudinal inward curves A and B, the curve A commencing at or near the water-line and the curve B at or near the keel. Both curves A and B meet at the bilge, and here I reversely curve the lines of the ship or boat, as shown at C, so as to form a bilge-keel in one with the side and bottom of the vessel. The finished vessel has consequently a bilge-keel on each side, as shown in Fig. 3, formed by a convexity O on the ends of two concave or inward curves A and B on the sides and bottom of the vessel. These bilge-keels O,I form outer metal skin A A B B and fill in the intermediate space with a material D, such as eoeoanut fiber, which will prevent water from filling the space if the outer skin be damaged.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
1. A ship or boat having an open-ended bilge-keel on each side thereof formed by a convexity on the ends of two concavities or inward curves on the sides and bottom of the vessel, substantially as described.
2. A life-boat comprising an open-ended bilge-keel on each side thereof formed by a convexity on the ends of two concavities or inward curves on the sides and bottom of the boat, an inner and an outer metal skin, and a filling material as described between the inner and the outer skin, substantially as described. p
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL GEORGE MARTENS.
