UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOTI-IAR VON KfiPPEN, OF WILMERSDORF, NEAR BERLIN, GERMANY SHIP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOTHAR VON KorrnN, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Wilmersdorf, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ships, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the frames of vessels, and a primary object is to improve the form of the afterbody of vessels having one or more hollows at the bottom.
According to the invention the bilges and propeller shaft tunnels of such vessels have contours which permit the water to follow the natural paths of the stream lines about the after part of the bottom, whereby resistance is reduced to aminimum.
The course of the stream lines with hulls of various shapes has been ascertained by investigations undertaken by D. WV. Taylor. (See Transactions of the Society of Naval Architects Ce Marine Engineers, vol. 1907.)
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a transverse section of a vessel designed in themanner known heretofore, and Figs. 2 and 3 are like views of a vessel designed according to my invention.
In general, Taylor found that the particles of water in the after ship run both from the lower part of the bottom in the midship section to about the middle of the stern-post corresponding to the line aa in Fig. l, and also from the vertical part of the main frame, rising somewhat aft, corresponding to the line bb. At the bilge K no uniform flow of the stream lines aft was observed. All the stream lines obtained by Taylor are consequently curves in the body plan and never straight lines.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 9, 1911.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912. Serial No. 659,430.
Taylors observations are used for the present invention in the case of vessels having a hollow at the bottom of the after body.
Referring to Fig. 2, that part a' of the frame which possesses the smallest radius of curvature and is curved most is connected with the middle 3 of the propeller arm by a curve corresponding to Taylors stream lines, as indicated by the dotted line aa.
As shown in Fig. 3, the outwardlycurved, rounded part of the frame is faired aft according to this curve with a gradually diminishing radius of curvature up to the propeller arm. In this manner the under-water flowing through the hollow A is almost completely separated from the side water coming from the space B. The adoption of the curve aa is essential for the invention, because only by keeping to such a curve is the natural flow of the water preserved.
Having thus described the invention whatis claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A frame for a ship provided wit-h a hollow in the lower face of its bottom in which the bilges bounding the hollow are faired in the form of curves which correspond to the natural flow of stream lines about the bottom and each extending from the lowest part of the bilge to a propeller shaft tunnel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOTHAR VON KOPPEN.
