Abstract

5674. Lowne, R. M. March 3. Pistons; stuffing-boxes; connecting-rods.-In an atmospheric hot-air engine the piston b, of trunk form, is guided outside the cylinder a by bars x and inside by a slide block b<4>, and passes through a stuffing-box a<3> shown in Fig: 3. A split steel ring a' is held against the piston by asbestos or other packing, the gland b<2> being pressed in by springs b<3>. The connecting-rod is made in two parts g, g<1> pivoted to the rocking lever h. The connection between the piston b and rod g consists, as shown in Fig. 4, of a flexible steel plate i, to take the pull, and a stiff spiral spring i<4>, to take the push, an elongated hole being made in one end of the plate i to allow freedom of movement. In case of excessive resistance, the projections i<1> from the rod come against the piston.
