Abstract

4963. Hamilton, C. A. Feb. 24. Engines with reciprocating cylinders.-Consists of a form of double-acting engine in which the piston works within a reciprocating cylinder. The example shown is an oil engine, but the invention is applicable to steam or other engines working with fluid under pressure. The reciprocating cylinder b works within a fixed casing a, and is furnished with external packing-rings dividing the annular space surrounding it into three compartments. The end compartments, into which the cylinder ports r, r<1> open, serve for the supply and exhaust of the motive agent. The piston f is mounted on a rod e with a crosshead h guided in the casing a and working on one of a pair of opposite cranks through the connecting-rod k. The cylinder works on the other crank through the medium of a connecting-rod n. Suitable admission and exhaust valves t<1>, t<2> are provided, and may be operated, through the linkage and bell-crank mechanism shown, from cams on a countershaft z.
