Abstract
20,706. Fero, C., and Bender, J. P. Sept. 26. Engines actuated by mixed steam and air ; engines with two or more pistons reciprocating oppositely within same cylinder.-An engine operated by mixed steam and air has two pairs of pistons in one cylinder driving two crank shafts. Air compressed by the engine is forced into the steam generator and mixed with the steam. The cylinder 2 terminates at each end in an air-compressing cylinder 3 of smaller bore. The cylinder 2 is placed between two crank shafts 16, and each pair of pistons 6, 7 acts on the corresponding crank shaft. The outer piston 6 has two piston-rods, and is fitted with a stuffing-box through which the piston-rod 11 of the piston 7 passes. The pistons 10 of the air-compressing cylinders 3 are mounted on the rods 11. The working fluid is distributed by two hollow piston valves 27 having grooves 30 and ports 32. The fluid entering the valve-chest by the pipes 33 passes through the interior of the valve and the ports 32 and through ports 5 in the cylinder either to the space between the pistons 7 or to the space between the pistons 6, 7. The exhaust takes place through the grooves 30 and ports 36 in the top of the valve-chest. Air is drawn in through valves 40 to the space between the pistons 6, 10, and is expelled through valves 42.
