Abstract

23,194. Watson, H. B., and Billetop, T. C. Oct. 24. Air-compressing engines.-An engine for compressing air to be used for cleaning boiler tubes, blowing whistles or sirens, working ash or ammunition hoists, signalling, or working steering-gear on ships or elsewhere is arranged as shown in Fig. 1. The steam cylinders 1 and air cylinders 2 are arranged in pairs in tandem, and the pistonrods are connected to a common crank shaft. Steam is distributed to the steam cylinders by balance slide valves of ordinary construction. The air admission and delivery for each of the air-com. pressing cylinders is controlled by a sliding piston valve, as shown in Fig. 2 at 6. Each of the valves 6 is operated by an eccentric on the crank shaft, as shown in Fig. 1 at 9. To economize space, the valve 6 is arranged in front of the air cylinder, and is inclined so that its rod points to the centre of the crank shaft. The usual arrangements for lubricating the working parts by the circulation of oil under pressure through the ports and channels shown are employed, the lower part of the engine being enclosed to allow of this. The air cylinders are connected by a common delivery pipe or reservoir. The steam cylinders may be arranged to work with multiple expansion, and the air cylinders with multiple compression. In another arrangement, the air cylinders may be provided with ordinary spring lift valves instead of with the externally-operated slide valve 6.
