Abstract

23,823. Fero, C., and Hastings, F. W. Nov. 3. Marine engines.-A steam engine is shown which has two auxiliary cylinders each with one piston, and a main cylinder between them with three pistons. The engine may be started, stopped, or reversed from either side. The main cylinder 3, Fig. 1, has pistons 6, 7, 8, pistonrods 9, 10, and ports 38, 39. The auxiliary cylinders 4 have pistons 12, acting as valves, and ports 40, 41 leading to the valve-chest 5 in which works the valve 14. Steam is supplied by the pipe 44. The piston-rods are connected as usual to the crank shaft by connecting-rods 19, 21<1> which have antifriction bearing- surfaces, as shown in Fig. 4, on the crank-pin end. The ports 38 admit and discharge steam to and from the space between the pistons 7, 8, while the ports 39 perform a similar function for the space between the pistons 6, 7. The ports 40, 41 serve to admit and discharge steam alternately to the cylinder 4. The hand-levers 50 mounted on the frame serve to start, stop, or reverse the engine by moving the valve spindle. Also, the eccentricrods have notches 36, 37 which may engage pins on the valve-rods and allow the engine to work in either direction. The lever 51 causes the valves 12, 14 to work in unison if required.
