2930. Hall, E. S. Feb. 3. Brakes for bicycles, tricycles, &c. applied by turning the handle. The brake block 1 is carried by a plunger 4 guided on rods 9 attached to a fixed plug 6. It is lifted by the spring 17 and depressed by pulling on the chain 14, which passes round a pin 11 fixed to the rods 9, and is connected through a screw coupling 16, 18, guide 25, and flexible coupling 31 to a slide 32. The slide 32 has a pin 34 projecting through a straight slot 37 and a spiral slot 38 inside the handle 40. The handle bears on the handle-bar by rings 41, 42, and is prevented from coming off, by a plate and screw 46. The part 18 of the screw coupling is adjustable from outside to allow the handle-bar to be raised, and is secured by a screw. A catch is provided to lock the handle. The brake itself consists of a plate 56, with lugs 58, 59 and T-slots or the like, through which rounded wires embedded in the block 60, made in one or two parts, are passed and locked by pivoted plates 65.
