Abstract

8037. Carroll, J. March 29. Brakes.-On the wheel rim B are fitted rubbing- parts A, which may be flat or have V-shaped grooves, and upon which the brake surfaces C act. The brake surfaces are at the ends of curved rods or plates D, D, which slide upon correspondinglycurved seats F on the fork E. The general curvature of these parts is an are of a circle, so arranged that, by pressing the upper ends of the plates apart, the brake surfaces are forced into contact with the rubbing-parts on the rim. The motion of the plates D may be produced by means of a wedge G upon the end of a rod H passing up through the head. This rod H may be depressed by a sliding bolt L, having a bend l adapted to engage the rod end, the bolt being operated by means of a stud l<1> passing through a hole k' in the handle-bar. A spring M serves to withdraw the rod H. The wedge G may be connected to the ends of the plates D by means of mortises and tenons ; a similar arrangement may be used to connect the plates and the guide-seats F. In a modification, the ends of the plates are formed with rack teeth which engage with a toothed pinion fixed on the end of a rod which passes up the handle-bar, and which may be rotated. The brake may be applied to the rear wheel of a bicycle or other similar wheel, or to any wheel such as a cogged wheel.
