18,542. Austen, E. T. Aug. 10. Brakes.-The brake consists of a wheel a having a grooved periphery and fixed to the spokes A<1> of the wheel A by convenient fastenings. Curved rods c<1>, c<2> and d<1>, d<2> are pivoted at b<1> to the fork b, the lower ends c<1>, d' of these rods being adapted to engage with the groove in the wheel a. The upper ends c<2>, d<2> of the rods are connected by links e to the bifurcated end f of the brake rod, which is operated in the ordinary manner. By pressing down the brake rod, the ends c<2>, d<2> of the rods are forced apart, and the parts c', d<1> forced into contact with the wheel a. The parts c<1>, d' or the wheel groove may be covered with leather or the like, and the wheel a may be made in two parts. A duplicate brake may be provided upon the opposite side of the wheel.
