Abstract
9839. Saunders, W. April 20. Brakes for bicycles &c. The brake disc E keyed to the crank axle has round it a brake strap, the ends of which are fastened to the bell-crank lever I, J. A third arm H, formed integral with the bell crank I, J, serves to tighten the strap on the disc. The lever H may, as shown, be actuated by a cord K, which passes up the frame members, a pulley being provided at the angle, to a system of levers L, Fig. 2, pivoted on the handle-bar, or it may be actuated by a cord, passing up the saddle post and attached by levers to the saddle. It may be used as a foot-brake by placing the lever H outside the frame tube and fitting a step or pedal to it.
