Abstract

189,334. Fairweather, W. C., (Underwood Typewriter Co.). Nov. 9, 1921. Line-locking devices ; margin stops.- In carriage-shift machines, the shift frame is provided with a stop-carrying member which is movable longitudinally by an abutment on the carriage, and is formed with a depending arm of sufficient length to engage a keyboard-locking member in all positions of the shift frame. As applied to a portable machine having a pivoted shift frame 23 supporting the carriage 20, the line-lock stop 30 is supported on a sliding bar 31 mounted on the shift frame and connected to a longitudinally movable link 35 having a depending arm 43 engaging a bell-crank 39 for obstructing the universal bar 21. The bell-crank is mounted on a vertical pivot 40. At line-end, an .abutment formed .m a lever 33 on the carriage engages a lug 32 on the line-lock stop, and moves the bar 31 and link 35, the bell-crank thereby being caused to obstruct the universal bar. To release the universal bar, a release-key 60 on the lever 33 is depressed, and springs 61, 62, thereupon return the parts to the normal position. The arm 41 of the bell-crank is supported by a notch 42 in a bracket 44. A margin stop 65 is mounted on the bar 31 and co-operates with the lever 33. The stops are provided with a finger-piece 66 formed on a C-shaped piece 67 which is guided vertically by ears 71. and is formed with a tooth 68 engaging teeth or. the bar 31, a spring 70 maintaining engagement of the teeth. The teeth are disengaged by depressing the finger-piece. The stops can be moved towards each other without depressing the finger-pieces. Alarms.-A bell 48 is mounted on the linelock stop 30 and is operated bv a hammer 50 mounted on a wire-spring which is secured to the lever 33. An inclined projection 52 on the linelock stop raises the lever in opposition to a spring 47, and the lever then drops and operates the hammer. To permit return of the carriage, the projection 52 is pivoted and held in normal position by a spring 54,
