Abstract

Paper - carriages; carriage - releasing arrangements.-A carriage-centring device and carriagereleasing means comprising a displaceable feedrack are operated by means of a key-member mounted independently of the carriage. The centring-device is shown in Figs. 1 and 4 as embodied in a portable machine comprising a carriage 21 running on a bed 13 and provided with a pivotally suspended feed-rack 27 engaging a pinion 28, the bed being secured to arms on a rock-shaft 11 associated with carriage-shift mechanism. The centring device comprises a guide plate 30 having ears 30<a> engaging the shaft, and ears 34 secured to the bed 13, the channelled side of the guide plate receiving the channelled sides of a slide 35 in which is mounted a second slide 37. An ear 35<a> on the slide 35 normally rests on the bottom of a slot 32 in the plate 30 and is connected by a spring 38 to an ear 30b on the plate. An ear 37a on the slide 37 is normally held in contact with the bottom of the slide 35 by a spring 39 connecting the ear 37a to an ear 35<e> on the slide 35. The slide 37 is formed with a notch 53 and inclines for co-operating with a stop 44 on the carriage. The centring-device is controlled by a key-lever 45 having an arm 45a which passes through a slot 37<b> in the slide 37 and engages the slide 35. To compensate for carriage-shift, the arm is curved on an arc concentric with the shaft 11. The key-lever is formed also with an arm 45<b> co-operating with an arm 42a on a frame 40 which can rock on the shaft 11 and has a pad 40<b> engaging the feedrack. On depressing the key-lever, the slides 35, 37 are raised, and the carriage is released and is permitted to run towards the left or is pushed towards the right until the stop 44 rides into the notch 53 in the yielding slide 37 and locks the carriage in centred position. The key-lever is locked by a pivoted hook 49<a> which co-operates with the framework 48. The hook is provided with a releasing-finger 49b.
